Our carefully thought out proposals for this landmark building are simple, with a view to its long term viability as a church, community & conferencing centre – bringing into use dead space on the railway elevation of the building and all without any alteration to the streetscape view.

This will require:

  • The renovation and renewal of the exterior
  • The renovation and modernisation of the interior

Our intention is to breathe new, long-term life into this semi-derelict building.

Renovation & Restoration of the Exterior includes

  • Re-install Edwardian fenestration to the left and right of the entrance
  • Reinstate the fenestration behind the columns on Courthill Road
  • Restoration of the detailed leaded lights
  • Overhaul first floor windows
  • Renovate the roughcast render and other features
  • Re-roof the entire building in slate
  • Renew the rooflight lantern in the middle hall

Renovation & Modernisation of the Interior includes

  • Provide new circulation including a main staircase and lift
  • Provide new facilities including a café, crèche, and toilets
  • Provide an enlarged auditorium, utilising the “dead space” of the redundant ancillary rooms along the railway embankment.
  • Introduce mezzanine floors behind modern glazed walling in the middle hall, making stand-out features of the central trusses.

Hundreds of people from within the community who attended our public open days at the building gave overwhelming positive feedback regarding our proposed designs. We therefore invite you to please take time to have a look through our design proposals and CGI styled concept pictures below. We believe these designs fully respect the history of the building, celebrating the few areas of the building that have survived, while also allowing for the building to evolve and be used in a 21st century context, to once again serve the people of Lewisham.
